XB-24N History
Given the experience Consolidated gained from the PB4Y2 Privateer, the final variant of the Liberator was to have a single tail fin. Designated the B-24N, it was destined to remain in the experimental stage. Only seven XB-24Ns were ever built.
The B-24N was to have several innovative features including a ratchet style power-operated tail turret similar to the B-17 and an erco nose turret used on the B-32. As with the Privateer, the single tail fin with the horizontal stabilizer with dihedral was designed to give the gunners a better field of fire from the rear.
An order for 5,000 B-24N models was cancelled due to the course of the war. This brought the total number of Liberators ordered to over 23.000 aircraft. With the end of WW2 the Liberator's career in American military aviation came to an end.
